History
The St. Peter Lutheran Church Congregation was formed in 1884. The stone church was built in 1948 after the congregation outgrew the original wooden building. Stones were brought to the church through a stone-hauling bee in which local farm families transported the stones that originated from their fields.
Over the years neighbors gathered at St. Peter to feed their faith at Sunday services. The church was the setting for the milestones of community life – baptisms, weddings, funerals, and more. Many people, including nonmembers, gathered to sing “Silent Night” by candlelight on Christmas Eve. The loss of farms surrounding St. Peter eventually took its toll on the congregation and its remaining members decided to close in 2016. We evolved into the nonprofit organization St. Peter on the Prairie in 2017 with a mission to carry on the legacy of St. Peter Lutheran Church by preserving the building and grounds to provide a welcoming place for all to gather in a rural setting. |
